FAQs

Who developed this website?

StudentParents.org was developed by BrightsideUNIAID, an education charity aiming to help students make informed choices about their education and employment options by providing online tools, ementoring and teaching resources. The site was funded by the Nuffield Foundation. We also worked with a number of expert organisations who helped us develop the website, including NASMA, AMOSSHE and the NUS.

What funding is available for student parents?

The types and amount of funding you can get will depend on whether you are studying part-time or full-time, and a range of other personal circumstances. You may be able to apply for specific grants like the Parents' Learning Allowance and Childcare Grant. If you're studying specific NHS courses like social work or nursing, you can apply for student support from the NHS.

Most importantly, make sure you research what you can get in advance. Don't be put off from applying just because it can be complicated - remember you can get advice from someone in the student services department at the university you're planning to go to. Try out our budget calculator to get a guide to what you could get and to build your budget. Our links page can also help you find information on funding.

I’m worried about childcare, what should I do?

•    Research what's available well in advance to make sure you get a place
•    Contact your university student services department to see what provision there is on campus
•    Remember to check childcare providers are Ofsted-registered so that you can claim the cost through the Childcare Grant

What costs will I have as a student?

The costs of student life vary enormously. You might have new expenses, like books or extra childcare, but you might also find new ways to save money, like student discounts. Our budget calculator and budgeting advice page can help you prepare for the costs of university.

Can I take part in ementoring?

Our Student Parents ementoring programme is currently a closed pilot, working in five cities in the UK. We hope to expand it to involve more student parents in the future, both as mentees as mentors.

However, the ementoring site contains lots of additional resources that are free to use for everyone.
